Yggdrasil (ユグドラシル, Yugudorashiru) is a Guardian ÄRM that calls out an enormous tree. Yggdrasil feeds off of the pain it causes to grow bigger and stronger. In the anime, it was made indestructible unless the source of magical power was cut off.

Techniques[]

  • Dance of the Leaves: An attack of Yggdrasil, many leaves launch themselves towards the enemy, cutting them.
  • Snaky Bow: An attack of Yggdrasil, grows large 'snakes' out of the tree branches, which then attack the enemy.

Etymology and Origin[]

Borrowed from Old Norse Yggdrasill; commonly accepted as being composed yggr (“terrible”) + drasill (“steed”), where “steed” refers to a hanging tree or possibly from *dʰer- (“to hold, support”).

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil connected the nine existences that straddled the worlds of gods and men with its mighty roots. Also referred to as 'the World Tree', Yggdrasil was reputedly a gigantic ash tree (and was the central feature of Norse cosmology), around the base of which the serpent Níôhöggr had twisted its body.

History[]

Twenty years prior to the second war, a man named Gaira stumbled upon Jake who was playfully bathing in a plunge pool and invited him to join in. While sharing a meal together around a campfire that night, Jake told Gaira about his dream to find a seed of the legendary tree, and to make a plant that would grow tall into the sky. This legendary tree, Yggdrasil, turned out to be an ÄRM which was owned by Vidar. Due to its nature of thriving off of the despair of mankind, Vidar, who held the same dream as Jake, joined the Chess Pieces in order to help Yggdrasil grow.

Vidar used Yggdrasil in the war campaign of the First Great MÄR Heaven War, which prompted Jake to join the Cross Guard and participate in the War Games to see for himself.

In the last round of the War Games, Jake faced off against Vidar. The two were evenly matched, with Jake obliterating Grass Bomb and Vidar repelling Magical Mushrooms. Upon Yggdrasil's activation, they took their battle up amongst the tree branches. Attacking Vidar head-on with his shovel against his cane, he asked how a plant manipulator could join the Chess. Vidar explains that it's due to Yggdrasil's nature to feed off of emotional and physical pain of humans as nutrients for it to grow. Jake was disgusted by such motives, but Vidar empathized with the fellow plant manipulator's dream and recognized his potential. Vidar then offered him a chance to save himself by joining the Chess, but Jake immediately turned him down and charged at him. Yggdrasil's Snaky Bow caught Jake mid-air and wrapped around him. Jake cried out that someday another plant manipulator would defeat him. Vidar laughs and accepts such a challenge, confident that he would still win. Yggdrasil's Snaky Bow then attacks Jake and kills him.

Six years later, when the war campaign of the Second Great MÄR Heaven War began, Vidar used Yggdrasil to attack Heinl Castle.

As with the previous war, Vidar participated in the final round of the War Games, facing off against Jake's son, Jack.
