Pano (パノ, Pano) is a Rook in the Chess Pieces.

Appearance[]

Pr

Full body view of Pano

Pano is a slender teenage girl with golden eyes and mint colored hair, which extends just past her shoulders. Under each eye is a red claw shaped tattoo pointing downwards. As a Rook, she wears the Chess pierce of her rank on her left ear. Her outfit consists of a blue strapless bra with dark bermuda shorts and bandage wrappings around her upper right arm and left ankle. Pano always goes barefoot.

Personality[]

Pano's most notable trait is her relationship with Jack, who she falls in love with during the series.

Etymology and Origin[]

From Old Portuguese pano, from Latin pannus, meaning 'cloth; rag'.

History[]

Ever since childhood, Pano and her brother Leno have been trained by their father, Garon, in the usage of ÄRMs. One day, Pano found her brother training with a weapon in the woods and asked why he suddenly wore a mask. Leno stated that he would become a Chess Piece one day. Suddenly a monstrous bear appeared and was about to attack the children. Garon rushed in and fought the animal off. The children hug their father, yet only Pano notices that he fought the bear without any ÄRMs equipped.

Later, Garon and Pano observe Leno sparring with a Chess Pawn. The Pawn easily knocks Leno back, but Garon instinctively jumps in and punches the Pawn. He asks Leno if he was alright, but Leno gets up and complains about not having a stronger ÄRM to use before running off. Pano calls out to him but is told by her father to leave him be, as he needed to learn on his own where true strength comes from.

Second Great MÄR Heaven War[]

War Games[]

Round 1[]

Pano and her family are introduced by Pozun as the Rodkin (ロドキン, Rodokin) Family, and the first team from the Chess to compete in the War Games.

When Leno is defeated in the first match, Garon steps onto the arena to pick Leno up and carry him off. Leno apologizes to his father, who then instructs Pano to go next. Pano assures her brother that she'll avenge his defeat as their father sits Leno down under the shade for a bit of rest.

Pano fights Jack in the second match. As the match begins Pano observes that Jack doesn't seem as strong as Alviss and was disappointed by this revelation. Jack summons his Earth Scoop and it clumsily drops it straight into his foot, causing him to jump in pain. Pano believes this to be a ploy to drop her guard and immediately charges at Jack, slamming her Weapon ÄRM, Ball Hammer, into his chest. Jack recovers and quickly uses his Earth Scoop to block her rapid strike attacks the best he can, yet her attacks leave him no opportunity to launch a counterattack. Pano remarks that Jack is good at running away and reveals an ability of the Ball Hammer to separate from the shaft and be launched as a projectile. Jack dodges it but the launched ball changes its path with a U-turn and slams into the back of Jack's head. She explains to Jack that her Ball Hammer can separate and while separated homes in on its target.

Alviss and the audience begin to criticize Jack's strength and skill but both Ginta and Dorothy believe in his strength. Jack then pulls out seeds from his pocket and scatters them at his feet. He then reveals one of the abilities he gave his scoop using a magic stone he received from Dorothy and causes the seeds to sprout into a large series of vines that wrap up Pano. Jack climbs up the vines, inattentively putting his hand upon her right breast. She screams and calls him a pervert, with the audience chanting the accusation. Without realizing it, Pano then strikes Jack in his "family jewels" with her Ball Hammer, causing him to faint and thus lose his first match. Pano runs happily to hug her father, who sternly yet proudly hugs back. Garon tells his daughter he'll handle the rest before stepping back onto the arena for his turn.

Once Leno rejoins his sister, the two watch their father battle Ginta. When Garon's ÄRMs break from Gargoyle's fist, Leno panics and yells for his father to give up. Pano tells Leno that his ÄRMs weren't the only reason he was strong, informing him that Garon didn't use any ÄRMs to fight off the bear that attacked them years prior. Before Gargoyle delivers a finishing blow, Pano leaps onto the arena and puts herself in between the two, begging Ginta to spare their father's life as they were satisfied with him losing the match. Leno joins his family on the arena, helping his father stand. Ginta accepts the surrender, and Pozun declares Ginta as the winner.

Round 3[]

Jack and Pano have a rematch in the second match of the third round. Before the match begins Pano belittles Jack for having lost to him in the first round but Ginta assures her that Jack isn't what he used to be. As soon as the battle begins Pano separates the ball portion from her weapon and attacks Jack by having it weave around while building up speed. Thanks to his training with Gaira during the second round, Jack can read the movements of the Ball Hammer. Pano goes in for the attack but Jack stops it with his hand, shocking Pano. He slabs the blade of his shovel into the ground making Pano believe that he's going to use his earth beans attack from their last battle. Jack leaves it in the ground as he leaves the shovel and approaches Pano without an ÄRM. Pano calls Jack a fool for abandoning his weapon and that she'll be taking a second win from him. She then splits her Ball Hammer into four segments and have them speed around the arena. Jack comments that he needs more training as he can only follow three of the four segments. He charges at Pano avoiding three of the segments only to be hit by the fourth right before he reached her. Pano comments he came close but Jack smirks and says he plan succeeded.

Suddenly sprouts start appearing on Pano's arm. Jack commands his ÄRM to make the sprouts grow and they immediately turn into Mararai Mushrooms, cause Pano to shriek in fear. Jack announces that this new attack is Magical Mushrooms, Type 1. Pano continues screaming she begins to hallucinate. In her hallucinations, the volcanos in the field start to violently erupt suddenly the visions change and she has worms crawling over her. Jack tells Pano that only he can remove those mushrooms. While he speaks to her, she hallucinates Jack to be absurdly handsome, falling in love at first sight and gives up immediately upon Jack's request. Jack blushes deeply as he's declared the winner, and picks of nearly all of the mushrooms before walking back to his team. However, one mushroom is still left on Pano's back, so she continues to hallucinate Jack as being incredibly attractive. She runs over to him to hug and kiss him on the cheek. As he playfully tries to hug back, he accidentally knocks the last remaining mushroom off of her back and she regains her sense of reality. Horrified, she backs away and calls him a perverted monkey, proceeding to kick him in the crotch once more out of anger.

Aftermath[]

Since the end of the third round, Pano reevaluated her opinions regarding Jack and found that she indeed find him attractive. The night before the beginning of the last round, Pano warned Vidar that she wouldn't forgive him if he were to defeat Jack. Leno tries to stop her from being rude to a Zodiac Knight, but she brushes it off as she can't help that she fell in love with him, picturing him as the handsome stud she initially saw him as while under hallucinations. Leno harshly disagrees with his sister on Jack's physical attractiveness before Vidar laughs as he learns who his opponent is.

Pano later appeared during Jack's battle with Vidar, where she gave her support to Jack and encouraged him throughout the battle.

The night before Ginta and Phantom's match, Pano wandered into a deep part of Lestava Castle and saw the Queen holding a strange sphere up to Snow, who was trapped within the World Tunneler. Hiding behind a pillar to briefly watch, Pano assumed the Queen was somehow sucking away Snow's magic power.

Pano and her family watch the final match between Ginta and Phantom. Following Phantom's defeat to Ginta, the family, along with most other Chess Pieces there, immediately return to Lestava Castle. The family decides to quickly gather their luggage and promptly flee the castle, not waiting for the Queen to make an announcement regarding the fate of the Chess.

After the War Games[]

In the anime, the family eventually makes their way to Acalupa Port and find temporary refuge in a vacant cottage in the woods outside of the town. The family makes plans to hide out on a deserted island to avoid persecution for being Chess Pieces. While her father and brother head for the harbor to find a boat, Pano heads into the market itself to steal food and supplies needed for the journey. Chased by many townsfolk whom she stole from, she encounters several members from Team MÄR, including Jack. Pano immediately tosses the food aside to hug him, and he ends up paying money the townsfolk for Pano's food.

Back at the cottage, Pano aggressively eats off of lobster while telling what she knows of the fate of the remaining Chess Pieces. Jack invites Pano and her family to come to his home on Pazurika Island, confident that the people there would accept them. Pano happily accepts Jack's offer, before turning to Snow to inquire if she was feeling well enough to use her ÄRMs. Pano informs the team of what she saw the night before Ginta and Phantom's match. Snow shuddered the thought that the Queen did something to her.

Suddenly, the weather outside changes, and Leno and Garon return to the cottage injured. Before they can say anything to Pano, their bodies disintegrate into dark matter and evaporate, much to her horror. Nanashi recognizes it as the same way Alan "died". They catch a glimpse of a fiery bird through the open doorway swooping in, and Alviss yells for everyone to get out of the house. The bird sets the house ablaze upon contact. Alviss, Belle, Nanashi, and Snow, make it out relatively unscathed, but Jack and Pano reacted too slowly and were still inside at the moment it went up in flames. Pano had lost consciousness and Jack carried her with her arm over his shoulder as they both faltered on their way outside. Jack then falls to the ground passing out, too, both with minor burns. The rest of Team MÄR is forced to flee from the mysterious masked man that commanded the fire bird, leaving Jack and Pano behind.

After the rest of the team's confrontation with the masked man, Alviss manages to return for Jack and Pano, who were still unconscious on the ground. Alviss then warps with Belle, Snow, Jack, and Pano back to Caldea.

The next day, Jack and Pano return to Acalupa Port. By sunset, Jack finishes make grave markers for some of the Acalupa villagers who perished, as well as for Leno and Garon. He approaches Pano, who was still crying at the base of a nearby tree, and offers his hand to her, telling her to cheer up. The two then travel back to Caldea to meet up with Ginta and Dorothy, but the two had already left with Alviss, Belle, and Ian. They spend the night in the house that Jack's teammates briefly occupied. Late in the evening, Pano enters the bedroom Jack was sleeping in, carrying her pillow and asking if she could sleep with him. With no response, she pulls the blanket back to find a dummy doll in his place. She realizes Jack snuck out to rejoin up with the rest of his team in Edel Mine, knowing she would be safe in Caldea.

Ginta faces off against Caldea's Orb on Earth, and Ginta requests for everyone back in MÄR Heaven to lend him their magic power. Pano lends hers as she is praying at the bed in the Caldean safehouse.

After the King of the Chess is defeated and killed, Pano and her family move to Pazurika Island to live with Jack and his mother on their farm together, and it appears that her family doesn't mind her relationship with Jack. They later get married.[1]

ÄRMs[]

Pano's only ÄRM is:

  • Ball Hammer: Pano's mace Weapon ÄRM. Has a detachable ball head with radar skills to track down opponents and can separate into 4 sections to attack from different angles.

Trivia[]

  • Pano is the only Chess Piece to defeat Jack throughout the War Games, though she loses in their rematch.
