Orco (オルコ, Oruko) was a Bishop of the Chess Pieces.

Appearance[]

Orco was a large, muscular man who is bald and has bulbous eyes. He wore his ÄRMs on each forearm.

Personality[]

Habitually speaking in third person, Orco possessed very low intellect and poor judgment, as he often overestimated his own abilities. He was sensitive about his appearance and quick to anger when insulted about it. He loved to destroy, and like most of the Chess Pieces had no regard for human life. He boasted about his strength, but showed his true cowardice when realizing he was outmatched.

Etymology and Origin[]

From the Italian orco ("ogre") and the word ogre itself, it ultimately derives from the Latin Orcus, a god of the underworld. His name came to be used for demons and other underworld monsters, particularly in Italian where orco refers to a kind of monster found in fairy-tales that feeds on human flesh.

The French word ogre (appearing first in Charles Perrault's fairy-tales) may have come from variant forms of this word, orgo or ogro; in any case, the French ogre and the Italian orco are exactly the same sort of creature.

History[]

Second Great MÄR-Heaven War[]

At the beginning of the second war, Orco was assigned to partner with Girom to attack the town of Vestry. After causing immense destruction, the two wandered into the village's cave, enticed by the local legend of a hidden ÄRM in Vestry's underground lake.

There, he spotted Nanashi and Dorothy. Nanashi volunteers to fight him alone, saying that his desire to pulverize the Chess was no less than Ginta's. Orco angrily throws a punch downward at Nanashi, only to miss and smash the ground instead due Nanashi dodging. Orco's fist is then revealed itself to be unscathed by the impact, as he had equipped the bracelet form of the Nature ÄRM, Body Hardener. He then grabs smaller rocks made from the impact and chucks them at Nanashi, but his quick (yet frantic) movements leave him unscathed. Dorothy activates her Zephyrus Broom, saying it was too risky to continue watching, but Nanashi assured her it was nothing he couldn't handle. Orco admits to being hungry and pulls out sausages from his pocket to consume. As he eats, he warns them of who he is and his intent to kill them. Nanashi tells him to savor the sausages he ate for it would be his last meal. He interrogates Orco for information regarding who was responsible for the attack on Vestry and asks how it felt after Orco admited his and Girom's guilt. His anger grew as Orco boasted about how fun it was to destroy houses and frighten people. Nanashi tells the brute that the cave would be his grave, causing him to angrily throw another punch. Nanashi effortlessly stops Orco's fist with the palm of his hand, shocking Dorothy with his immense physical strength. He then jumps up and punches him back in the face, declaring him to be weak. Orco flies back into the pool of water behind him, and Nanashi asks him who among the Chess wields an ÄRM that sucks out blood. Orco is quick to respond Peta's name, hoping he would be spared from Nanashi's wrath. Satisfied, Nanashi uses his Nature ÄRM, Electric Eye, to zap Orco, its power intensifying due to the conduction of being in the water.

Nanashi and Dorothy leave, but Orco manages to survive, and struggles to make his way out. He encounters Phantom, while masquerading as Tom, who then kills Orco for his cowardice after Phantom witnesses Ginta's battle with Girom, telling Orco to take lessons from Ginta in the afterlife.

ÄRMs[]

Orco's only ÄRM is:

  • Body Hardener: An unnamed set of armbands that hardens one's body.
