- "It all depends on the heart of the person using it... An ÄRM isn't just a tool...it only comes alive when you connect with it."
- ―Iffy
Iffy Pendleton (イフィー・ペンダルタン, Ifī Pendarutan) is a character in MÄR Heaven: Devil of Caldea and MÄR Heaven: Oblivion of Clavier. A chaser who knows most things about Caldea, she is Daffy's younger twin sister and Dorothy's best friend. She gives adventure advice to Ginta and his friends.
Appearance[]
Iffy is a tall young woman with pinkish eyes and hair. She wears a green dress with a matching shoulder cape.
Personality[]
Unlike her twin sister, Iffy is a gentle woman with a kind heart, though she is not without her own wit, occasionally sassing Dorothy when given the opportunity.
Etymology and Origin[]
Iffy's family name, Pendleton, is an English habitational surname from places in Lancashire, England, most notably the village of Pendleton and Pendle Hill. Pendle Hill is famous for the historical Pendle witch trials of 1612.
History[]
Like her older brother and sister, Iffy was a renown chaser in Caldea. At some point, her beloved pet fox Izune was terminally ill, and Iffy was so distraught that she resorted unsealing the Pandora Records to create a forbidden Holy ÄRM, Gem Life, to save Izune. Putting the collar on, Izune quickly recovered and continued to live as if she were never sick. However, after her brother's death, Iffy ultimately decided to retire from chasing as a result, only doing as a hobby from that point on.
MÄR Heaven: Devil of Caldea[]
AKT.1 Iffy's Hermitage[]
One day, Izune wanders off in Caldea Forest and Iffy goes out to look for her. Unsuccessful, she returns to her cabin to find Izune back inside with Dorothy and her friends of Team MÄR. Iffy and Dorothy happily reunite and the latter introduces her teammates. Dorothy jumps to the purpose of their visit, when suddenly another presence arrives outside.
Ginta and Babbo go outside first and see a girl with a living ÄRM of her own. She introduces herself as Wheat and her ÄRM as Gotchi, having come to challenge Ginta and Babbo to a duel to decide who the superior living ÄRM is. After a fierce battle, the duel ends in a stalemate, causing Wheat and Gotchi to retreat with the intention to return again to settle the score.
Back inside the house, Iffy explains that the large stake they encountered is called an Earth Juggler. It activates when thrust into the ground, and coverts energy from the ground into magic power which it then collects. Concluding that the mastermind is likely in Caldea, Iffy instructs Team MÄR to meet with the investigation teams scattered across the islands to locate other Earth Jugglers. Seeing how affectionate Izune was with Princess Snow, she suggests they take Izune with them to make use of her ability to find and dig up useful ÄRMs.
AKT.6 Flying ÄRM[]
While in her bedroom, Iffy is dreaming about her older brother Chaffy, who was panicking over the seal on the Pandora Records having been lost but insisting that it was not due to negligence but rather an accident. He apologizes to Daffy and swears that he did not betray anyone, before shaking his head and wailing. Iffy wakes up, realizing it was all a dream and thinks of her brother.
Moments later, Team MÄR returns to her home to ask her for help in reaching the place above the clouds, and luckily Iffy has an ÄRM that she's carving to do so. To add the finishing touches, she sends them on an errand to retrieve a Chimaira Fang and a Roc Bird Feathers. Team MÄR ventures to the caves on the south end of the island to obtain the items. When they return, they watch her use the items to finish crafting the Magic Ball. Using it, Team MÄR flies to the place above the clouds, Magritte Cemetery.
AKT.7 Magritte Cemetery[]
Iffy inevitably follows them herself, appearing behind them after they enter the chapel to expose Daffy. She confesses to being the mastermind behind the creation of Gotchi and the appearance of the Earth Jugglers. Iffy steps forward, crying out that no one would be happy with her actions. Daffy angrily calls out her sister's hypocrisy for having also crafting the forbidden ÄRM to prolong Izune's life. Iffy turns away, admitting her shame as she explains why this ÄRM was forbidden. Daffy then grabs Izune by her collar, breaks the ÄRM, and tosses Izune to the floor.
After Daffy teleports away, Snow holds Izune in her lap with false hope that the little fox would recover. Izune peacefully lets out one last "umo" before passing away in Snow's arms. As she teared up in shock, Iffy gently insisted that Snow needn't cry, as Iffy was glad it turned out like this. Nevertheless, the princess cathartically wept that ÄRMs had caused nothing but suffering. As she grieved, Babbo spoke up to give her a new perspective as an ÄRM himself. With her teammates joining consoling her, Snow gathered her strength to stand up, resolving to put an end to Daffy's scheme. Iffy gives the remnants of Izune's Holy ÄRM, Gem Life, to Snow.
AKT.8 ÄRM Shrine[]
Back at Iffy's Hermitage, Snow falls asleep in Iffy's bed while she and Dorothy discuss the next course of action. Iffy concludes that the most likely hiding location Daffy would be in is the ÄRM Shrine on Torneå North Island, due to their history of playing there together as children and lack of activity from anyone else in Caldea. As they discuss the possibility that Iffy would have to kill Daffy in accordance to Caldean law, Snow appears in the bedroom doorway, having woken up and gotten some rest. Iffy decides to accompany Team MÄR to the shrine to help them confront her sister.
Upon arrival at the island, Iffy uses her power to disarm the trap that Daffy planted on the stairs leading up to the shrine. Hesitant to proceed, she is reassured by Team MÄR that, since Daffy's identity as the mastermind hasn't yet been made known to the public, she may not have to personally go through with killing her twin sister.
They make their way through the shrine, and meet Daffy and Wheat, the latter of whom is holding her head in pain. They tell Wheat to let go of Gotchi, but despite understanding their concerns, she weakly declines, as Gotchi was all she had in terms of a "friend". MÄR engages in battle with Wheat, Gotchi, and Daffy, and though they won the battle, the trio manage to escape by teleporting away, though not before hinting on their destination. Dorothy then realizes that Caldea's Grand Elder was in danger.
AKT.9 Caldea Palace[]
First flying to Caldea Town, Team MÄR sees its citizens all lying on the ground in a severely weakened state, having their magic power and and energy being drained by the nearby Earth Juggler. This prompts them to fly to Caldea Palace, and find the grand elder in a similar state. He manages to confirm Daffy and Wheat's whereabouts in the palace. MÄR makes their way to the basement, and horrifyingly discover the monstrous form that Gotchi has evolved into after having "consumed" both Wheat and Daffy. MÄR battles the evil ÄRM, and manages to destroy him.
In the moment that Gotchi is destroyed, Iffy enters the dimension inside of Gotchi to find Wheat and Daffy. Wheat is still unconscious, and Daffy is confused about where they are at, surprised to see her sister. Iffy calmly informs her, and stated that according to Caldean law, she would execute her. Iffy reaches for Daffy to grab the Holy ÄRM, Gem Life, that she also wore and breaks it with her hand, causing Daffy's lifeforce to slowly drain. Daffy expresses regret over all that she had done, and Iffy admits guilt on her own part. Daffy reassures her little sister that she needn't carry such guilt, as the death of their brother Chaffy wasn't her fault. As a last request, Daffy asks Iffy to take care of Wheat on her behalf. Daffy then quietly thanks Ginta, before passing away.
Epilogue[]
In the aftermath, MÄR returns to Caldea Town to check in with the citizens. The townsfolk recover, and inform them that while the Earth Jugglers have since been deactivated, they are being left alone for the time being due to no one currently having the means to remove them.
Back at Iffy's Hermitage, Iffy gives her gratitude and parting words with each member of MÄR individually. They step out onto her porch, and with Nanashi's Dimension ÄRM, Andata, return to Reginleif. Back in the house, Iffy calls to Wheat to come out, as the latter was hiding in her bedroom. Iffy asked her if she was really okay with not showing herself to Ginta, to which Wheat admitted that she wouldn't know what to say if she saw him. They step outside for a walk in front of the cabin, and Wheat asks if Ginta and the others really could win the War Games. Iffy reassures her with faith that they would, as she raises her arms out to the side and leans back to gaze at the stars.
MÄR Heaven: Oblivion of Clavier[]
Iffy, now Wheat's mentor, is at Caldea Palace with her protégé. While preoccupied in the palace research room reading a book, Wheat comes in with Dorothy, Alviss, and his fairy Belle in tow. Only moments later does she notice Dorothy yelling at her and asks her friend to settle down. Iffy calmly assesses Alviss's condition, and instructs Wheat to go retrieve the Legendary Holy ÄRM, Gabriel Kiss. Wheat expresses her uncertainty about using such a treasure without permission, but Iffy urgently convinces her that now was the most appropriate time for its usage. Wheat goes to the palace vaults while she sends Dorothy on a emergency errand to pick up Schweitzer for his assistance.
Wheat returns to the room and stays with Alviss and Belle while Iffy hastily prepares the room next door for treatment and Dorothy returns with Schweitzer. He makes brief small talk with Wheat regarding Alviss, when Iffy and Dorothy signal for them to bring Alviss into the next room and put him on a pedestal. Schweitzer takes the treasure, and musters up his magic power to activate the Legendary Holy ÄRM, Gabriel Kiss. Alviss is enveloped in a pillar of prism light, causing him to restlessly twist and turn on the pedestal. With encouragement from Dorothy, Wheat, and Belle, he bears with the treatment. After several moments, Schweitzer deactivates the ÄRM and Alviss slowly sits up. Iffy asks him how he was feeling, and Alviss stands on his feet, responding that most of the pain had subsided. Alviss takes note of the Ghost ÄRM still on his body. Both Iffy and Schweitzer explain that Gabriel Kiss only removed the physical pain caused by the Ghost ÄRM, and so long as it remains on his body, time will continue to move faster on him and further advance the progression of the Zombie Tattoo.
Back in the research room, Iffy explains to Alviss what Ghost ÄRMs are and gives information regarding Misty Castle when he inquires about it. Schweitzer leaves to do some investigating on his own in Reginleif and Iffy and Wheat offer some countermeasures against Ghost ÄRMs to Dorothy. She sends Wheat on an errand to pick up Ginta from Reginleif Castle and bring him to Caldea Palace to explain more about Ghost ÄRMs to him.
