Ian (イアン, Ian) is a former Rook class of the Chess Pieces who was promoted to a Knight, where he was the 7th strongest, before defecting from the army.

Appearance[]

Ian is a tall man with black spikey hair and teal colored eyes that are normally squinted. He wears a pale yellow robe with a youren closure, with the sleeve cuffs and collar being maroon colored. Underneath, he wears a blue tank top, brown jogger pants, and black flat shoes.

Personality[]

On the surface, Ian appears to be a laid-back, jovial young man who is one of the few Chess Pieces to have the daring to be blunt and disrespectful towards his superiors. This ranges from addressing Loco with the honorific "-chan" in spite of her insistence on their age gap, to talking back to Halloween who is one of the highest-ranked Knights, and in his quest for vengeance later on, challenging even the Knights.

Ian's amiable manners, however, belies the lethal, battle-thrilled fighter he can be in the battlefield. Once driven by determination he is relentless in his pursuit, be it a simple case of getting the fight he enjoys or the venture to eliminate a superior sworn enemy. Ian's tenacity is prone to lead him go against his orders, and Ian admits because of it, he is always mentally prepared for death penalty. Although his affiliation evidences the contrary, Ian is a man of high morals - in fact, it was his idealistic dream to "purify" the world instead of selfish desires like most other Chess Pieces that urged him to join it in the first place.

His love for his girlfriend, Gido, outweighs his ideals and well-being, and later becomes his motivation in battle throughout the series. His upright nature attracts great respect from his opponent, Ginta, and though the sympathy doesn't align their causes, it eventually manages to diminish their initial enmity.

History[]

Six-Year Interlude[]

Ian and Gido joined the Chess some time after first war ended as Pawns. Eventually, Ian was promoted to the Rook Class and earned his pierce. Gido congratulated him, stating she would catch up to him soon in rank. Both of them strived to become Knights in the future, and have active roles in purifying the world once Phantom revived.

He was amongst the Chess Pieces at Phantom's revival. He first officially appears alongside Loco to obtain Snow for Diana. This led him to his first fight with Ginta Toramizu and later Alan until Snow was freed. Halloween was sent by Phantom to recall Ian and Loco from their mission so that Phantom can start their war campaign.

Second Great MÄR Heaven War[]

After collecting information at a pub, they track down Alan in the forest, who had been guarding two Gate of Training doors for three days. Alan's sleep deprivation causes him to be significantly weaker, barely being able to endure Ian's attacks with his new Weapon ÄRM. Ian asks where Ginta was and Alan suggests that he's hiking. Gido attempts to intervene to make Alan tell the truth, but Ian gestures her to stop, continuing to make small talk with Alan. Eventually, Ginta and Snow emerge from their gate and step in to defend Alan. She continues to observe as Ginta repels Ian's attacks and punches him in the gut.

Once Dorothy and Jack emerge from their gate, Gido steps in to defend Ian. He tries to talk her out of it, but she instructs him to heal himself with his Holy ÄRM while she buys him time. Gido states that she's aware she's no match for them, but it would not obstruct her desire to protect him and that he had the potential to become a Knight one day. Gido targets Jack, as she thinks she can at least defeat the opponent with the lowest magic level. Dorothy tells Jack to take on the Pawn for looking down on him. Gido charges forward, but Jack immediately sends her flying back with an Earth Wave attack. Ian hobbles over to Gido to assess her condition. Ian offers Ginta a deal: let him use his Holy ÄRM, Healing Angel, to heal Gido and then hand it over to Ginta in exchange for allowing them to leave. Alan comments how sympathetic Ian was for a Chess Piece to want to heal a lowly Pawn, not understanding their relationship. Ginta accepts the offer, and Ian proceeds to sit Gido up, pulling back her hood and removing the mask to reveal that she was a woman. Gido apologizes to Ian as he heals her, but he says nothing. After he finishes healing her, he acknowledges his defeat to Ginta but states his intent to win next time before tossing the Holy ÄRM to him. The two warp back to Lestava Castle.

His insubordination reaching the ears of the Knights, soon after his return to the Chess headquarter, Ian and Gido were detained separately in the castle's dungeons to be questioned by Halloween. Ian's direct responsibility notwithstanding, instead of him, Halloween chose Gido to be condemned to the final punishment, which was to be carried out by a ruthless Knight of his choice. Upon hearing the news, Ian broke down and appealed to Halloween to spare Gido. His attempts, however, ended in futility.

War Games[]

By the time of his release, the day of the War Game's preliminary round, Gido was metamorphosed into a tentacled, half-human half-bug creature with disabled mental facilities. Her mishap conducted significant changes in Ian; he became reticent and always kept his mask on while constantly exudes a hostile aura, as the incident shattered their ambition to 'purify the world' under the Chess Pieces' banner.

After having spied on the spectacular debut of Ginta's Babbo v.3, in his first battle, Ian realized the width to which their strength gap had extended, and requested the most perilous Gate of Training from Phantom to conquer his shortcomings. Dismissing Peta's warning of the risk he was going to undertake as irrelevant, Ian resolved to train inside the Gate until he could be as good as a Knight to kill Ginta and Gido's persecutor.

Ian's reappearance was after the 5th round of the War Games at Reginleif Castle, where he turned up for a brief meeting with Ginta to warn him about their incoming battle, now that he had finished his training. He returned to Lestava Castle and was arranged by Phantom to fight the Knight Rapunzel, who was due for punishment under charges of acts of massacre against subordinate Chess Pieces without Phantom's permit should she fail to defeat him.

Ian Visits Gido 3

Ian weeping for Gido.

Underestimating Ian as a common Rook, Rapunzel entered the fight with confidence with Ian easily killing her (by decapitation in the manga, and incineration in the anime) inadvertently avenging all those slain by the woman. To the witness of all Knights present, Phantom then officially inducted Ian into their ranks and gave him the Knight earring. Before he left, Ian publicly declared his oath to expose Gido's antagonist among the Knights to daylight and eliminate him.

Ian visits Gido after he had slain Rapunzel and became a Knight. She tried to reach her hand up towards Ian's newly acquired Knight earring and, despite not being able to speak, attempted to smile. Ian broke into tears behind his mask, agonizing at her suffering.

Round 6[]
Chess Team Sixth Battle

The Chess participants of Round 6.

Ian participates in the sixth round of the War Games, alongside three other Knights and the strongest Bishop. Silently, he watches each match carefully until his turn arrives.

After Magical Roe abducts Princess Snow and is awarded the victory against Team MÄR, Ginta leaps onto the field and demands to know where Princess Snow is being taken. Ian enters the arena as well and simply tells Ginta that he doesn't know. Both Alan and Dorothy answer Ginta that it is almost certain that Snow is being taken to Lestava Castle. Ginta shouts that they're heading to Lestava right away but Ian interrupts this by striking Ginta in the shoulder with a whip ÄRM. Ponzu also informs Ginta that if Ginta were to leave before the match was finished, then it would count as a forfeit and Team MÄR would lose the War Games. Angered, Ginta tells Ian that he'll have to win the match then Team MÄR will be going after snow immediately after. Ian ask Ginta if he can recall the words Ian told him after Ginta first defeated Ian. As he kicks the head of Pinoccion Ian remarks that Ian is going to kill Ginta and that he has waited for this day to come. Thus the final match for round 6 begins.

Ginta, underestimating the newly appointed Knight & determined to end the match as quickly as possible brings out Bubble Launcher and fires a swarm of bubbles at him. Ian recalls having lost to this attack last time and counters by throwing the crescent shaped bladed Weapon ÄRM, Moon Fall, at the bubble destroying them all in the process. Ian exclaims that he brought the ÄRM specifically to counter Bubble Launcher and that the two attacks cancel each other out.

Ian evades Ginta's attacks

Ian VS Ginta

Ian ask Ginta if he can recall when they first met and comments that was a lot of fun and that he was excited that Ian had met someone who could be so fun but now this battle was about revenge. Three claws emerge from the arms of Ian's robes and he charges Ginta. Ginta summons Dagger Arm to fend of the attacks asking Ian what he means by revenge. Ian lands a solid blow on Ginta's chest and answers from the last time they met. Ginta gets back on his feet and tells Ian that he's changed and ask what happened to make Ian change.

Ian launches a series of attacks with his Weapon ÄRM, Octopus II, while informing Ginta that he couldn't understand the pain that Ian is going through. Ginta counters the whips by destroying the blades with Dagger ARM but the tips grow back and slice Ginta up. Ginta thinks to himself that Ian really has gotten stronger but Ian isn't the same as the last time they battled. Ian ask Ginta if he has ever felt someone else's rage come down on him. Ian further comments that there are three things he cannot forgive: the first is himself. The day that the second War Game began Ian had directly disobeyed Phantom's orders and went to fight Ginta because of that action Gido, the girl who was always with him was turned into a worm and can't so much as speak now. The second thing Ian cannot forgive is Ginta.

While talking Ian activate a Darkness ÄRM, Demonic Bond. A chain appears and connects to both Ian and Ginta's wrist. Alan recognizes the ÄRM and informs Ginta that it is terribly dangerous, it causes magic power to turn into blood and seep out of the body posing a danger to both the user and their opponent. Dorothy tells Ginta to use Alice immediately to undo the curse. Ian tells Ginta he won't allow it and counters with the Darkness ÄRM, Weight of Grief, which crushing Ginta underneath it. Ian tells Ginta that he's not gonna lose anymore and punches Ginta with his fist which causes the Demonic Bond to drain Ginta of more magic and blood. Ian ask if Ginta knows what it's like to lose something precious to him. Ginta stands up and explains that he does have someone precious to him and that he made a promise to save Snow. He strikes Ian in the face with Hammer Arm and once again begins to summon the Guardian Alice. Babbo begrudgingly takes the form of Alice and dispels the cursed chain from both Ian and Ginta.

The final thing Ian cannot forgive, he comments, is the Chess for turning Gido into the form is cursed with at current. Ginta can't understand why Gido and Ian joined the Chess in the first place. They both witnessed the first War Game so why would they join them to begin with. Ian activates yet another Weapon ÄRM, ÄRM Break, which erupts with a large number of various deadly weapons but it is easily countered with Cushion Jelly. Ginta says if he knew all the evil the Chess were capable of from the start then the person Ian should blame the most is himself. Furious Ian activates his Guardian ÄRM, Peryton, summoning a giant devil looking beast.

Ian Quits The Chess

Ian tossing his Knight pierce and defecting from the Chess Pieces.

As Ginta summons Gargoyle he remarks that Ian didn't become stronger from rage, but from the thoughts and feelings for Gido. Peryton's chest opens up and fires a giant laser blast to which Gargoyle responds with his own blast. Gargoyle's blast overpowers Peryton and destroys him. Ian collapses and tells Ginta that his magic is all used up. Ginta smiles at Ian and tells him he needs to go and kick the ass of the person who cursed Gido. Ian tells Ginta that he didn't need to be told to do that as Ian tosses his knight's earring aside and that Ian is gonna risk his life to take back what's precious to him. With the final match concluded MÄR is declared to be the victor and the ending score for round six is 3-2 in MAR's favor.

Round 7[]

Following a hunch that the 4th Knight Chimera might be the enemy he was looking for, Ian silently observed her battle with Dorothy, only to have his suspicion confirmed. Agitated to get his revenge, he impeded their fight half-way and challenged Chimera, but was disallowed further interference by Dorothy and had to return to his post outside the stage.

After the War Games[]

After match between Dorothy and Chimera ended in the latter's defeat and her subsequent flight, Ian leapt into action and pursued her across MÄR Heaven. For nearly a week, she tried to shake him off her trail, but was unsuccessful. Eventually, he came across a trio of Pawns in the woods who had just encountered Chimera. The Pawns ask Ian for help, explaining that civilians revolted against them after Phantom lost to Ginta. Pleased at the news, Ian declines to help them and resumes chasing Chimera and quickly catches up to her. Hopping from branch to branch of the trees, Ian clashes with Chimera, intent on making her restore Gido to normal. While running on the path in the woods, Ian notices the fog becoming denser and eerier. He arrives at a clearing, being a wasteland with a tall butte emanating an evil aura.

Chimera began making her way to the butte with delight and ignored the numerous skeleton soldiers and vengeful ghosts that were active around her. Meanwhile, Ian had to engage in combat with the undead soldiers that attacked him. He recognized the symbol on their uniform as being the emblem of a kingdom that fell during the first war. Recognizing that their grudge and hatred bound them from passing on to the afterlife in peace, he sorrowfully acknowledged that Chimera was the same as them. Nonetheless, Ian continued to fight his way through them to catch up with Chimera, motivated by his love for Gido.

By the time Ian reaches the base of the butte, Chimera has already reached the top, but he still proceeds to climb up after her. With the ground shaking, he senses something happening up top, and charges up his magic power to brace himself for what awaited him. After several minutes, the top layer of the butte broke off and Ian saw a horrifying monster from which Chimera protruded out of. He summoned his Guardian ÄRM, Peryton, and mounted it to meet Chimera in dangerous combat. Ian resolved to destroy the monster, insisting that he couldn't allow her to have such a wicked power.

Ian and Peryton evaded the first series of attacks, and the monster fired a powerful energy beam from its mouth. Peryton countered with its own attack, with both appearing to be evenly matched. While standing his ground and giving Peryton more magic power, Ian witnessed the physical metamorphosis occurring to Chimera's body as she laughed maniacally. Her demeanor suddenly changed, and she roared in an outburst with the horn that protruded from her forehead suddenly breaking. Ian seized the opportunity and destroyed the monster, though due to his severe wounds and exhaustion, Peryton was withdrawn and he fell to the ground. In spite of her critical wounds, Chimera was quick to get back up and lash out at Ian in frustration. She assured him that she wouldn't give him an easy death, intending to destroy his beloved first. Chimera drops him and warps to Lestava Castle, while Ian briefly loses consciousness.

Ian manages to wake up after a short time and warps back to Lestava Castle to catch up to Chimera once more, finding that she was trying to strangle Gido to death and ordered her to let go. Chimera drops Gido to the ground to face Ian, questioning if he has what it takes to kill her. Having learned of Chimera's sorrowful past in her versus Dorothy battle, Ian undauntedly questioned her willingness to repeat a sin years ago was done to her on another. Chimera prepares to use Gido as a hostage, asking Ian if Gido was really that important to him. Ian nods in response and Chimera challenges him to take her back himself. Ian easily cuts through Chimera's attack and slashes at her chest, revealing the Ghost ÄRM that was used on Gido interlocked by Chimera and Marco's wedding rings and worn as a necklace.

Chimera then offers the ÄRM to Ian, affirming that she was only handing it over as a way of "cursing" Ian and Gido to living in such a trashed world that she had long since given up on. Ian breaks ÄRM to restore Gido as Chimera collapses on the floor. She gazes at Ian and Gido, seeing herself with Marco. She wishes her true self, Eileen, a happy life and dies peacefully.

Walking together out of the dungeon, Gido helps a tired Ian by putting his arm over her shoulders while wearing his coat. Hearing voices outside, Ian glances out of the castle window and sees Team MÄR ready to assault the castle to rescue Snow. Ian's happy reaction confuses Gido, prompting her to ask what was going on. Ian promised to to tell the story later. Ian sweeps Gido off her feet to carry her, planning to use the chaos from the castle assault as their cover for escaping, marking Gido's defection from the Chess Pieces.

Ian continues carrying Gido through the woods while looking for a place to hide where he loses his footing at the top of steep slope and the two slide down into a ditch. They see refugees on the road being directed by Ash, who they quickly befriend. He takes them in under his care as they help the refugees rebuild Edel Mine, a settlement that Ash used to govern.

King of the Chess Pieces[]

When tears in dimensional space begin to appear near Edel Mine, Ash sends Ian to Caldea to bring Ginta back for help. Ian returns at sunset with Ginta, Babbo, Dorothy, Alviss, and Belle.

The day after Ash is killed by the King of the Chess, Gido bandages Ian's injuries, lacking a Holy ÄRM to use. Gido tells Ian that the children are in town helping the adults with rebuild, just as Ash would. Ian comments that the kids are more focused than he is, feeling shame for Ash's sacrifice because of his own lack of strength and determination. Gido reassures him that the children won't be mad. She then expresses her desire to not fight anymore, instead to live peacefully in the village with the children. Ian silently agrees, leaning in for a kiss, before being interrupted by the arrival of Jack.

Ian gives Jack directions to where Ginta and the others went to, while Gido helps outside with construction. Ian offers Jack his Andata and Gido's Magic Carpet, stating that they no longer needed them. He then joins Gido and the other villagers in construction work, seeking to carry on in Ash's place.

Happily Ever After - Ian and Gido

Ian and Gido living a peaceful life in Ash's village.

After the defeat of the King of the Chess, Ian and Gido are among the handful of former Chess Pieces who see Ginta and Danna off in their return to Earth.

Happily Ever After[]

They are seen together again in their house in Edel Mine, often visited by Ash and the village children and presumably finally accepted by the villagers.

ÄRMs[]

Ian's an extremely skillful Weapon ÄRM user. He specializes in ranged attacks, which is demonstrated by his mastery of whip-type Weapon ÄRMs:

  • Python Whip: A Weapon ÄRMs that resembles a pair of snake-shaped whips; by concealing these in the long sleeves of his clothes, Ian is able to quickly strike them before his opponent even realize they've been hit, making for a good surprise attack.
  • Octopus: A Weapon ÄRMs made up of eight, whip-like tentacles which can regenerate when damaged. After training in the Gate of Training, he upgraded Octopus into a far deadlier Weapon ÄRM with various forms, the Octopus II.
    • Octopus II: An upgraded form of Ian's previous Weapon ÄRM, Octopus, with various sharp blades on the tip of each tentacle.
  • ÄRM Break: An incredibly deadly Weapon ÄRM which, upon activation, causes various bladed weapons to violently extend from Ian's body to swiftly impale any and all nearby opponents.
  • Moon Fall: A mid-to-long ranged Weapon ÄRM that creates multiple crescent-shaped blades that Ian can throw at the opponent(s).
  • Demonic Bonds: One of two ring Darkness ÄRMs which creates a chain that binds Ian to his opponent, weakening both of their magic by draining their blood. If either one of them has their magical power completely syphoned, they will die and the match will end.
  • Weight of Grief: One of two ring Darkness ÄRMs that is capable of taking on the form of an iron maiden upon summoning. Anyone who makes physical contact with the iron maiden, or who's bound to it, will be unable to use Holy ÄRMs.
  • Peryton: A ring Guardian ÄRM from which Ian calls forth the mutated hybrid of legend, possessing far greater prowess than its said origin is depicted.
  • Healing Angel: A pendant Holy ÄRM that can heal injuries, to a certain extent. After using it on Gido to heal her injuries, Ian gives this ÄRM to Ginta as per the deal they made to end the skirmish.
