Personality[]
History[]
Twenty years prior to the second war, Gaira stumbled upon a young man named Jake who was playfully bathing in a plunge pool and invited him to join in. While sharing a meal together around a campfire that night, Jake told Gaira about his dream to find a seed of the legendary tree, and to make a plant that would grow tall into the sky.
Jake would later give up on the dream when he and Gaira met a girl who was being threatened by a pair of werewolves. Jake activated his Battle Shovel and used his Earth Wave technique to scare them away. Gaira and Jake both stay at her farm home for a while, the latter helping with planting new crops. Gaira observes Jake and the girl developing deep feelings for each other, and takes Jake aside behind her house for a private conversation. Jake stated he wanted to go with Gaira, who was planning on competing in a martial arts tournament in a neighboring country. Gaira scolds Jake for using his intent to get himself out his own dilemma, knowing full well that Jake was truly in love with the farm girl. Jake admits that her smile made him realize that he wanted to use his skills to bring the rough land to life and make her truly happy. Gaira assures him that he won't laugh at his change of heart, for he had found a new dream. Jake thanks Gaira, and they promise to meet again one day on when the land was thriving with greenery.
First Great MÄR-Heaven War[]
In order to fight back against the mysterious Chess Pieces who began wrecking havoc across the world, Alan and Gaira formed the Cross Guard, consisting of soldiers from various countries, the largest percent from Lestava itself. Queen Diana offered various ÄRMs to the Cross Guard to weaponize in the war. Sometime during their campaign, Alan, Gaira, and the Cross Guard were under siege by the Pawns at an old fort when Lilith appeared. Alan would then recruit her into the Cross Guard, but sometime later after her village was destroyed, Gaira let Alan and Lilith enter his Gate of Training where she disappeared into a gate-like Dimension ÄRM and was never seen again.
During the early stages of the war, Queen Diana met with Alan and Gaira again at Lestava Castle and offered Alan the Dimension ÄRM Gatekeeper Clown, coaxing him to try it to potentially aid the Cross Guard in the war. Gaira received one from the queen as well, but merely held on to it while Alan used his to summon Danna Toramizu from Earth. Alan then took Danna into the Gate of Training, and after training was completed, appointed Danna as the new leader of the Cross Guard, with Alan as second-in-command and Gaira as third-in-command.
Gaira travels to Pazurika Island and appears before Jake with an arm injury. The family bring him into the home to treat him, and he informs them of the great ongoing war throughout MÄR-Heaven. Showing an image of Yggdrasil, Gaira asks Jake to come with him to Lestava Castle, as his strength and botanical expertise was crucial in dealing with the indestructible tree which was bound to show up in the upcoming War Game. Jake then joined Gaira and returned to Lestava.
War Games[]
In between rounds of the War Games, the Cross Guard would celebrate victory with outdoor banquets. During one of their first banquets, a ten year old boy named Alviss asked to join the Cross Guard. Danna took a liking to Alviss due to his pure feelings and invited Alviss to join him in pulverizing the Chess, to which Alan lectured him for drafting a child. But Alan and Gaira were impressed with the boy's courageous spirit, and Gaira assured him that they would win the war. After Phantom had cursed Alviss with the Zombie Tattoo, Alviss took a dagger and prepared to commit suicide, but Alan stopped him, questioning if death was what Alviss truly desired, for choosing death would mean admitting defeat to Phantom. With Gaira's encouragement, Alan insisted that Alviss train under Gaira to become stronger in order to fight back against Phantom and decide his own fate.
Gaira then witnessed Jake's death at the hands of Vidar, Alan's stalemate with Halloween, and the apparent death of Danna in the final battle against Phantom.
Six-Year Interlude[]
Almost immediately after the conclusion of the War Games, Gaira and young Alviss would take to the wilderness of Lestava to spar in swordplay, though Alviss struggled to land a single hit against Gaira. A fairy named Belle joined their group, becoming Alviss' fairy partner. Whenever Alviss entered the Gate of Training, Belle had to wait outside with Gaira while he trained against stone golems with his bare hands. Upon his return from the gate, Belle immediately flew to him and hugged his face, much to his delight. Alviss finally succeeds in defeating Gaira with his bare hands while the latter used a wooded pole. Gaira praises his improvement, but Alviss says it's due to the time limit he has to become stronger. Despite being just a boy, Alviss says he's ready to venture out on his own to become stronger. Gaira rewards Alviss with a parting gift, the Guardian ÄRM, 13 Totem Pole. Alviss and Belle then bid farewell to Gaira and left on a journey to become stronger.
Over five years later, Gaira felt an ominous premonition of the return of the Chess, and decided to briefly meet with Alviss again, who was now 16 years old. Saying that he didn't know if he might die in the near future, he gave Alviss his Dimension ÄRM, Gatekeeper Clown, which he had since the first war and held off from using.
Second Great MÄR-Heaven War[]
War Games[]
Gaira and other soldiers of the Cross Guard arrived at Reginlief Castle and Alviss to participate in the War Game of the second great war. In the preliminary test those wishing to partake in the tournament were required to take a Magic Stone for a practice match. Unfortunately, while the other contestants were paired up against Chess Piece pawns, Gaira had unknowingly picked up an "automatic failure" stone and was forced to fight Chimera, the 4th strongest of the Zodiac Knights. In the face of Chimera's superior power, Gaira barely managed to survive the assault, but nonetheless was eliminated from participation in the War Games, leaving the fate of MÄR Heaven in the hands of a small group of teenagers.
Afterwards, Gaira voluntarily took on a supportive role to train the lesser experienced members of MÄR within the Gate of Training.
Before the final battle, he performs a rough work that activates six "Gates of Training" at the same time. However, he seemed to have endured it considerably, and as soon as Ginta and the others finished training, he gasped and was exhausted.
At the end of the anime, he was last seen alongside Edward and the King of Lestava attending the wedding of the Princess of Reginlief and Cal.
