Aqua (アクア, Akua) was a Bishop in the Chess Pieces.

Appearance

Aqua was a pretty, and apparently young, girl who wears a purple sea-themed ball dress with pearls and other ornaments attached to its skirt. She possessed shiny light-blue hair with a huge bang on the right side of her face. She also wore a yellow crustacean shell on her head like a crown and had a red Star painted on her left cheek. While her eyes are mostly closed, it is shown that her eyes are dark blue.

Personality

Despite being a Chess Piece, the happy and rather unpredictable Aqua always kept a smile on her face, much to the surprise of Team MÄR. Aqua refers to everyone with honorific suffixes in the Japanese version, while in the English dub puts either "Mr." or "Miss" in front of everyone's names, including herself.

Etymology and Origin

Despite being human, Aqua is based on the titular character of The Little Mermaid.

History

Second Great MÄR-Heaven War

War Games

Aqua is first seen in the fourth round of the War Games. When Rapunzel claims all of Team MÄR is ugly, Aqua replies by saying that Alviss and Nanashi were cute. Rapunzel then angrily slaps Aqua, before asking if she found them to be prettier than herself. Aqua assures Rapunzel that she is more beautiful, and the latter reminds her team that she has sensitive feelings about her appearance.

Once Aqua's turn comes up, she happily skips onto the battlefield. As Ginta intends to fight Girom, Nanashi chooses to fight Aqua, though Dorothy, Alviss, and Jack call him a pervert. Though she kept her usual smile, she was afraid of Rapunzel’s wrath and tried desperately to avoid the fate of her comrades.

When the battle begins, Nanashi offers her the first move, repeating the same reckless chivalry he displayed in his previous match. Aqua then summons her Guardian ÄRM, Akko, and it casually drags itself across the rough snowy surface towards Nanashi. He jumps over it to dodge, activating his Weapon ÄRM, Griffin Lance, to attack the Guardian as it came back around. Nanashi's initial strike barely caused a dent in the clam's hard shell, as Aqua sings Akko's praises regarding its defense. Aqua calls for Akko to use its Pearl Attack, and the Guardian leaps into the air to shoot countless pearls out of its mouth at Nanashi. He frantically runs out of the way and manages dodge all of them.

Aqua changes her strategy and recalls Akko into ÄRM form. She then leaps into the air and materializes ice skates at the bottom of her shoes. Nanashi is confused by this move, but nonetheless watches as she skates across the ice around him. After skating multiple revolutions around Nanashi, Aqua skates off to the side to put distance between herself and him. She takes the conch shell from her head, and blows into it, revealing it to be her Nature ÄRM, Supikara. The sound attracts a large sea creature from the water under the ice to hone in on Nanashi from underneath, using the circle Aqua made as a target. Despite the monstrous fish successfully inhaling him into its mouth, Nanashi pierces through the roof of the creature's mouth with his Griffin Lance and escapes.

Aqua, seeing how she stands no further chance and will end up dying at Rapunzel's hands, chooses to hide inside Akko for one final and last chance attack. Using the Rolling Akko-chan technique, Akko spins counterclockwise rapidly with Aqua inside and lunges toward him. Nanashi, however, leaps over the spinning clam and uses his Nature ÄRM, Electric Eye, to zap Akko and knock out a very dizzy Aqua from its mouth. In an attempt to save Aqua, Nanashi falls onto the ground and pretends to be exhausted, leading Pozun to call the match a draw.

Before leaving, Aqua thanks Nanashi as he wishes for her to take care. Rapunzel, however, is angry that the enemy sympathized her, and plays "Rock-Paper-Scissors" with Aqua for her life. Aqua wins by beating Rapunzel's "Paper" with "Scissors", but is immediately impaled by Girom, who declared that he had "Rock" with his fist, and had used Iced Earth from his fist to create an ice sword that he used to stab her. Aqua weakly apologized to Nanashi as she fell to the ground and died. Enraged by the cruelty of Rapunzel and Girom, Ginta violently attacks Girom, initiating the next match.

Aftermath

After the fourth round ended, Pozun prepares to use his Andata to send the surviving participants back to Reginlief Castle, but Nanashi interrupts him, holding Aqua in his arms. He wades into shallower icy water and sets her on the water's surface, gently pushing her away from him so that she would float and then sink into the sloped trench before him. Nanashi wishes that she rest in peace with her watery burial.

ÄRMs

• Akko: Guardian ÄRM used by Aqua, summons a giant mobile clam that, unlike most Guardians, allows the user to still move while summoning it. It has the following properties:
  • Pearl Attack: Akko darts out a rain of pearls from its mouth.
  • Rolling Akko: the user jumps into Akko and spins it at breakneck speed.
• Spikara: A crown Nature ÄRM in the shape of a spiral seashell. By blowing in it, the user can call on sea creatures to aid in battle. Aqua wears Supikara on her head.

Trivia

• Aqua is one of only two Chess Pieces shown to have received a funerary burial, the other being Phantom.
