"I don't think of it as a coincidence. Maybe that idiot will become the savior of this world."
―Alan to Alviss about Ginta
Anime

Alan (アラン, Aran) is a former soldier of Lestava, co-founder of the now-defunct Cross Guard, and a member of Team MÄR. He is responsible for summoning Danna Toramizu to MÄR Heaven to fight in the first war against the Chess Pieces.

Appearance[]

Alan is a man with tan-colored skin with different shade brown hair (highlighted on his bangs is the lighter brown) hair and dark colored eyes he has a pair of scars on the right side of his face.

Personality[]

Alan is known to many as a legendary hardened, smoking warrior. He can be rather overconfident, but this is rarely seen as a fault because of his power. He also displayed the concern over others' well-being, willing to take the brunt of Halloween' attacks intended for the audience during their final duel.

His tough exterior hides an emotional trauma from unwittingly brought his childhood friend Pump to a dark path. Alan was meant to inspire the young boy to stand up for himself, but the latter misinterpreted his wisdom and became a power-hungry sadist who slaughtered those who wronged him before disappearing. In the anime, the trauma was more apparent after Halloween hinting his true identity to Alan, leaving him shakened to the point of frightened a young man who showed his best friend an expensive bracelet-type ÄRM — a scene which eerily resembled his aforementioned ill-fated attempt to help Pump all those years ago. His intentions in helping Pump was pure since like the latter, he had a hard time in making friends with other kids in their own village. After defeating Halloween in their final battle during which his opponent and Pump are revealed to be the same person, Alan finally found the closure of such trauma.

As the result of sharing a body with Edward for so long up until their separation, Alan became allergic to cats — a new weakness he discovered during the duel against Chaton. This fortunately has since eased over time with Chaton's frequent company, enabling him to be comfortable with her presence by time Lestava Castle is retaken.

Etymology and Origin[]

During his time under the curse that bound him to Snow's servant dog, Alan insists on being called "Ed". It is likely that "Ed" having both a human form and an anthropomorphic dog form is inspired by various stories of Reynard the Fox. The characters of Reynard the Fox were based on the medieval hierarchy, and are treated as human throughout the tales. Though, since multiple authors wrote the text, characters' personalities often change. Throughout the stories, these characters often switch between human and animal form and often without notice. The characters who switch between human and animal form are often those of elite status, while the characters who don't change tend to be peasants.

History[]

In his childhood, Alan had a reputation for being the toughest kid in his hometown in Lestava. Out of loneliness, he sought friendship with a dingy boy named Pump, who was badly mistreated by other boys in the village for being skittish and weak. Alan often came to Pump's rescue and scared the bullies away.

Alan and Pump

Alan offers to train Pump.

One day, after helping Pump down from hiding in a tree, Alan invited Pump to train with him using a fire ÄRM that he secretly trained with. Pump eventually stole the ÄRM and used it to provoke a pack of two-headed dogs. When Alan arrived at the scene, the dogs had already been reduced to ashes, and Pump tells Alan how great it feels to have power. Alan tried to clear the misunderstanding, stating that his intent was merely to help Pump gain courage to stand up for himself. In response, Pump calls Alan a hypocrite trying to act like a hero, before running off. Alan blamed himself for recklessly and unintentionally awakening the devil in Pump's heart.

When Alan became an adult, he enlisted as a soldier for Lestava, and served the royal family at the castle. When the queen passed away, he witnessed four year old Princess Snow uncontrollably crying, which prompted the king to seek out a new wife that would also be a good stepmother for Snow. Two years later, when the king met and married Diana, Alan immediately trusted her due to her kindness and bond with Snow.

First Great MÄR Heaven War[]

In order to fight back against the mysterious Chess who began wrecking havoc across the world, Alan and Gaira formed the Cross Guard, consisting of soldiers from various countries, the largest percent from Lestava itself. Diana offered various ÄRMs to the Cross Guard to weaponize in the war. Sometime during their campaign, Alan, Gaira, and the Cross Guard were under siege by the Pawns at an old fort when Lilith appeared. She used her Unique ÄRM, Pleine Lune to repel the Chess Piece Pawns and the fact that her parents were Legendary ÄRM Users. Lilith's village was attacked by the Chess Pieces at the time Lillis was with the Cross Guard. During that time, her family was killed. Alan blamed himself for what happened. When she and Alan were in the Gate of Training, Lilith disappeared into a gate-like Dimension ÄRM where she wasn't heard from again.

Danna Begins His Training

Danna begins his training with Alan.

During the early stages of the war, Diana met with Alan again at Lestava Castle and offered him the Dimension ÄRM, Gatekeeper Clown, coaxing him to try it to potentially aid the Cross Guard in the war. Using it, Alan summoned Danna Toramizu from Earth. Danna, despite being rather in shock upon arrival, was soon captivated by the fantasy world he had always dreamed of. Alan tries to be more realistic about the situation with the presence of the Chess, and reminds Danna that he was summoned to participate in the war. Danna reassured him that he would become stronger and help defeat the Chess. Alan then took Danna into the Gate of Training, and after training was completed, appointed Danna as the new leader of the Cross Guard, with Alan himself as second-in-command and Gaira as third-in-command.

A ten year old boy named Alviss joined Cross Guard. One night during a fierce battle, Alviss confronted Phantom personally and cried for him to stop killing his teammates. Before Alan could intervene, Phantom inflicted Alviss with the Zombie Tattoo. After Phantom left, Alviss took a dagger and prepared to commit suicide, but Alan stopped him, questioning if death was what Alviss truly desired, for choosing death would mean admitting defeat to Phantom. With Gaira's encouragement, Alan insisted that Alviss train under Gaira to become stronger in order to fight back against Phantom and decide his own fate.

Alan VS Halloween Match

Alan and Halloween's match ends in a draw.

War Games[]

During the War Games at the time, Alan fought to a draw with Halloween (who became the Chess Pieces' third-in-command under strategic chief Peta, and the No. 1 Knight Phantom). However, because of a curse set by Halloween's Darkness ÄRM, Igneil, in the same fight, Alan was sealed inside the court guardian and custodian of Princess Snow, Edward the Dog. In order to change back into Alan, Ed has to sleep three times, often forcibly knocking himself out, which is too risky and inconvenient for most situations. If Alan sleeps once, he becomes Ed again.

Six-Year Interlude[]

A few years after the first war, the King of Lestava fell ill, and Diana began showing her true self and let many "suspicious" individuals into the castle. Sensing the danger Snow was in, Alan followed the prophecy of the Oracle of Lestava, and fled the castle with the princess (while still inside of Edward).

After Edward was knocked unconscious and switched places with Alan, he introduced himself to Ginta and lent him the ÄRM of Flame to thaw the ice. Awakening from the melted ice, the princess's eyes locked onto Ginta's as she fell on him and they accidentally kissed. Ginta immediately got back up, overwhelmed with mixed emotions, while Snow looked around and happily greeted Alan (whom she also referred to as "Ed") and thanked him for saving her. Alan corrected her that Ginta was the one who deserves the credit. She glanced back upon Ginta, who was lying on the ground again from utter shock and she remembered the kiss they shared moments prior.

Halloween then arrives and informs Loco and Ian that the mission to capture Babbo and Princess Snow has been aborted, as the Chess Pieces were called to assemble at Lestava Castle for the Second MÄR Heaven War. As Halloween laughs at Ginta being responsible for breaking Ian's arm, the other boy named Jack yells out that Ginta is a human from a parallel world.

After the Chess leave, Snow introduces herself to Ginta, who then falls over in shock once more thinking about the kiss. Panicked, Snow hops over to Alan and asks him about the kiss since it was also her first time. Alan jokes that she should give him more as the two children blush over the incident.

With the ice melted, the castle returns to its former state and the group exits outside. The kids properly re-introduce themselves to each other and Alan leads them to their next destination of Pelica Port. Along the way, Jack makes small talk with Snow about how he met Ginta and Babbo, referring to them as 'vegetable thieves', and stating he was travelling with them for the purposes of training. The group takes a quick break at stream and Ginta asks Snow what she would've done if the old man hadn't come back to save her. Snow responds that she just had faith in Ed, before being called back by Alan to continue walking.

World History During Lunch

Alan teaches Ginta about MÄR Heaven.

Arriving in Pelica Port, they visit a local pub for lunch and Alan questions Ginta on his knowledge of their world and current situation. Snow asks Alan if she could go outside to play with Babbo, and he grants permission so long as she was still within his line of sight through the window. Alan then teaches Ginta and Jack the basics about the world of MÄR Heaven with a map. As Snow and Babbo head back inside the pub, Alan declares that Ginta, Babbo, and Jack would be joining their party, suggesting that training was in order.

Alan leads them to the woods outside of town to find a suitable location for training. Before explaining what magic power was, he exerted some of his against a pillar, revealing a witch named Dorothy who had been secretly following them since they left the frozen castle. Dorothy immediately flew up to Alan to threaten him if he were to do anything "funny" to Ginta. Snow intervenes to stop a potential fight from starting, desiring peace with Ginta's witchy friend. Dorothy takes notice of Snow's Nature ÄRM at her hip, and sensed that she was a "potential rival" for Ginta's affection. The group parts with Dorothy as they continue deeper in the woods.

Alan finally decides on a spot and continues to explain what magic power is. He gives Ginta three magic stones and calls out to Dorothy, who had still been following them, to come join them. Alan then activates his Dimension ÄRM, Gate of Training, and summons two doors on the ground. Snow, who had been expecting the use of this ÄRM, was the only one who did not scream as she, Ginta, and Babbo fell in one gate while Dorothy and Jack fell in the other.

Alan is soon approached by Alviss, now grown up into a seasoned fighter. The two reminisce on how much has changed for them both since the previous war, and Alan asks if he was going to partner up with Ginta just as he did with Danna. Alviss scoffs at the idea, referring to Ginta as "weak" and didn't want to see more comrades die. Alan agreed that Ginta was weak and foolish, but insisted that it was fate that he was summoned and retrieved Babbo.

Second Great MÄR Heaven War[]

As they were training, Alan spoke with Alviss until news of the Chess Pieces attacking MÄR Heaven reached them. With the sudden attacks by the Chess Pieces across the world, the Cross Guard sent out a distress call through their communication pierces requesting for Alan's help. Alviss received the message as well, and asked him to come with to aid the countries that were under assault. Alan calmly asks Alviss to go on his behalf, being unable to leave the two Gates of Training that he activated. Disgusted by his decision, Alviss runs off with his partner fairy Belle following behind after she sticks her tongue out at Alan in concurrence.

Alan guards the Training Gates

Alan guards the Gates of Training.

For a total of three days, Alan guarded the two doors but was tracked down by Ian and a Pawn named Gido. Alan's sleep deprivation causes him to be significantly weaker, barely being able to endure Ian's attacks with his new Weapon ÄRM. Ian asks where Ginta was and Alan suggests that he's hiking. Gido attempts to intervene to make Alan tell the truth, but Ian gestures her to stop, continuing to make small talk with Alan. Eventually, Ginta and Snow emerge from their gate and step in to defend Alan.

Once Dorothy and Jack emerge from their gate, Gido steps in to defend Ian. He tries to talk her out of it, but she instructs him to heal himself with his Holy ÄRM while she buys him time. Gido states that she's aware she's no match for them, but it would not obstruct her desire to protect him and that he had the potential to become a Knight one day. Gido targets Jack, as she thinks she can at least defeat the opponent with the lowest magic level. Dorothy tells Jack to take on the Pawn for looking down on him. Gido charges forward, but Jack immediately sends her flying back with an Earth Wave attack. Ian hobbles over to Gido to assess her condition. Ian offers Ginta a deal: let him use his Holy ÄRM, Healing Angel, to heal Gido and then hand it over to Ginta in exchange for allowing them to leave. Alan comments how sympathetic Ian was for a Chess Piece to want to heal a lowly Pawn, not understanding their relationship. Ginta accepts the offer, and Ian proceeds to sit Gido up, pulling back her hood and removing the mask to reveal that she was a woman. Gido apologizes to Ian as he heals her, but he says nothing. After he finishes healing her, he acknowledges his defeat to Ginta but states his intent to win next time before tossing the Holy ÄRM to him. The two warp back to Lestava Castle.

After Ginta, Jack, Snow, and Dorothy finished their training and fended them off, Alan instructs them to head for the Hild Continent to help the civilians until the War Games begin. He then falls asleep and lands on the ground. This caused him to revert back to Edward. In spite of this, Alan was counted as the second member of Snow's newly formed Team MÄR.

War Games[]

Round 3[]

On the night before the third round, Edward latest sleep turned him into Alan again. When he appeared, Phantom had Halloween tell Pozun to let Alan participate in the War Games.

When Alan decides to go first, only Alibaba steps forward to take him on, claiming the other Chess Pieces there are too weak to fight him and that victory will make him a Knight.

As soon as the match begins Alibaba activates his Guardian ÄRM, Genie's Lamp. While doing this he tells Alan not to look down on him for being a mere Rook, as the Chess hierarchy doesn't necessarily dictate strength but a mastery of ÄRMs and more importantly their accomplishments in battle, citing Loco's victory over Nanashi. He continues to monologue that his ÄRM will give him impressive victories and rubs the lamp like ÄRM calling forth the great genie from within. Alibaba claims that out of all the ÄRMs he has, this Guardian is the most attuned with his "sixth sense" and that even Knights would have a hard time with the pair. Alan casually taunts Alibaba and his Genie to attack. The Genie charges towards Alan but he destroys the Guardian bare handed with a single blow.

Alan's Ruthlessness

Alan easily defeats Alibaba by dropping him into a volcano.

After destroying Alibaba's Guardian, Alan walks up to him and delivers a powerful punch to his stomach. He then comments that Alibaba had made three major mistakes as he grabs him by the neck of his shirt to drag him uphill to the volcano's crater. As he drags him he goes over the mistakes Alibaba made. The first was to completely synchronizing with an ÄRM takes time, in addition concentration, sixth sense and magic must be raised through training and if once synchronizes with a Guardian that also has a will of its own then even more time is required. The act of sending him to attack right at the start of battle proved that Alibaba was an idiot. The second mistake was he wasn't ready to fight someone like Alan. The third mistake was disrespecting Alan. He then drops Alibaba into the crater to fall into lava and walks back, both teams alarmed by Alibaba's sudden and apparent death.

When Snow's match against Mr. Hook begins, the latter declares that the battle will be over quickly and Alan agrees saying that Snow can't win this fight. The two of them exchange attacks with their weapons, Ginta cheers for Snow and ask Alan "what's with the she can't win crap" to which Alan merely responds that Ginta can't see what's in front of him. Alviss points out that because Snow is an ice user, fully synchronizing with her ÄRM in an antithetic environment takes a larger toll on her body and mind and agrees with Alan that she has no chance of winning. Ginta finally understands what Alan meant and yells at Snow that she's done enough and he'll take care of the rest. After she forfeits the match, Alan reminds Ginta that as strong-willed as Snow is, she's still only fourteen years old.

Aftermath[]
Huzzah The Curse Is Broken

Alan and Edward rejoicing in their curse being broken.

After the visit from Phantom and his Zodiac Knights following the end of the third round, Alan and Ed are split apart into two beings by Ginta, using Babbo, Version 3: Alice. When Gaira sent the other Team MÄR members into the Gate of Training, Snow persuaded Alan to let her rest up in one of his.

Round 4[]

When it came to the fourth round, Alan tells Ginta, Jack, Dorothy, Nanashi, and Alviss that he won't be fighting with them since he wants to see how much they improved.

Aftermath[]

After that round, Dorothy speaks with Alan prompting a trip to Caldea. During that time, Alan got a new Guardian ÄRM.

When helping the other Team MÄR members in the Training Gate, Alan ended up paralyzed by Saturn's Darkness ÄRM, Finstarnis, which allowed the other members of the Zonnens to infiltrate the Training Gates. Alan was having a hard time fending off Saturn until he instructed Merilo to have the others send their magical power to him. It wasn't long before the others were able to leave the Training Gate and finish off Saturn.

Round 6[]

Alan decides to participate in the sixth round in place of Nanashi, intending to keep himself in tip-top shape. Using his Andata, Pozun teleports himself and the participating members of Team MÄR to the stage of the sixth round: the Mushroom Field.

The Chess team for the sixth round soon appear on the stage, each hiding their identity with cloaks aside from Ian who donned a mask. Alviss assessed that due to each of them having high amounts of magic power, they were all likely members of the Knight class. Snow felt discouragement, but Alan reassures her that there was no need to worry since volunteered to go first. The Knight in the green cloak pointed out to his teammates who Alan was and claimed him to be the strongest of Team MÄR. The Knight in the blue cloak tells Chaton to be his opponent. The purple-cloaked Chess Piece obediently jumps below onto the arena, displaying agility and light-footedness. In contrast, when Alan joined her, the arena briefly shook from his weight landing. He beckoned her to remove her cloak, calling her "Knight". Chaton corrected him that unlike her teammates she was a Bishop. Team MÄR presumed confidence in Alan's victory immediately, but Chaton giggled that of she was was not to be underestimated as she was in fact the strongest Bishop of the Chess Pieces. Alan respectfully accepted Chaton's challenge.

Chaton attacks Alan

Alan frantically dodges Chaton's Para Claw.

Once Pozun declares the match to start, Chaton immediately runs forward to jump in the air to remove her cloak, revealing feline appearance. Alan immediately ask for someone to switch with him but Pozun informs him that once a match begins switching members isn't allowed. Chaton meanwhile activates the Weapon ÄRM, Para Claw, which creates claws of energy on Chaton's hands. Chaton makes several attack but Alan dodges them all but panics each time. Alviss comments that Alan doesn't normally fight in that manner while Ginta yells for Alan to use his Air Hammer. An agitated Alan tells him to shut up and that he knows what he's doing. Alan launches an Air Hammer that collides with Chaton. Chaton that begins crying that that attack hurt.

Snow, realizing why he's fighting the so differently, tells everyone that Alan has a cat allergy. Alviss and the group begin to comment and mock Alan for this feline phobia he inherently got from being fused with a dog. Alan yells at them to shut up, then Ginta points out that he seems to not have a problem with Merilo. Dorothy laughs harder for assuming that "cat girls" were his taste. Alan yells back again, clarifying that Merilo doesn't bother him because she's an ÄRM.

Chaton begins to laugh realizing Alan's allergy gives her an advantage in the fight. Alan tells Chaton not to get too close because his Air Hammer will still send Chaton flying. Chaton suggest that she'll just have to make Alan come to her and summons the Nature ÄRM, Cat Teaser. As Chaton waves the ÄRM around Alan's body begins to move on its own and begins walking towards Chaton. Alan gets closer and closer until he is within range of Chaton's Para Claw and gets slashed across the chest. After being struck by Chaton's attack Alan realizes that her attack induces paralysis leaving Alan open to the barrage of blows Chaton rains down on Alan. While Alan lies on the ground realizing he shouldn't have gone first Chaton stands over Alan and unexpectedly give him a kiss commenting that he's cute. Alan rolls on the ground shouting in horror.

Alan tells Chaton that he's really gotten angry now and digs in his pocket for the ÄRM he acquired in Caldea, for it only for his face to go blank. Ginta and the others realize that Alan forgot to even bring the new ÄRM and once again begin to mock him. Chaton laughs at him again and decides to bring an end to their match, summoning her Guardian ÄRM, Bururu. Alan recollects himself at the sight of the giant bulldog guardian and smirks, saying that if it's a dog then he'll just take it out in one hit. Alan delivers a single punch to the guardian and destroys it. As the dust settles, his confident face turns to bamboozlement when he sees Chaton readying her final attack, who explains that Bururu was simply a distraction. Gathering enough energy in her hands, she releases her Nyan Nyan Wave and the impact sends Alan flying. As he lies defeated, Alan mumbles that he really hates cats. Pozun declares Chaton the victor.

Aftermath[]
Alan as Shunsaku Kudo

Alan as Detective Shunsaku Kudo.

When Gaira's Gate of Training send all of Team MÄR to Fake Tokyo, Alan, like his teammates fall under Pleine Lune's memory spell. The powerful Guardian then put Alan in Shunsaku Kudo cosplay and substituted him in for Yūsaku Matsuda's character in Detective Story, a 1979 TV drama that Ginta is fond of.

While taking a nap in the lounge of his office, "Merilo", who acted as his receptionist, came to inform him that she passed out all of the leaflets and brought a new customer. A young woman with dark hair and white clothes sat down on the opposite couch. While Merilo went to prepare coffee, the young woman inquired if the leaflet she received was trustworthy. Alan assured her it was, as the agency had experience in various fields. The woman clarified that what she meant was if she could trust him to find "it" no matter what, even at the cost of his life. Her eyes glowed red, and Alan fell under her trance. She then handed him a photograph of what she wants him to find.

Ginta and Dorothy managed to find Alan later that day, who was freaking out with three cats hanging onto him. He shakes them off, and the two follow him back to the office. They make a request that he search for a man named Alan, despite them knowing the detective himself is Alan. He turns them down, saying that he was already in the middle of another job, but once he had his back turned, Ginta and Dorothy attempt to tackle him, only to end up on top of each other. Dorothy sees the photograph, and holds it up while asking if it was his current job. Alan panics, as it was a photo of a cat. She continues to torment him with the picture, offering a deal on helping him search for the cat.

Alan resumes searching the streets on his own, wondering how they knew of his felinophobia. He tries to enter the train station, but the ticket barrier rejects his stored-value card and closes its gate. Confused since there was still credit on the card, Alan then tenses up as he senses his client behind him, telling him he cannot leave the city, yet he must continue searching indefinitely for the kitty.

He continues his search elsewhere, finally tracking down the cat at a construction site and chasing it up the scaffolding. Climbing up a craned beam, the he comes face-to-face with the cat, and it licks him on the nose causing him to fall. He is rescued by Ginta and Babbo, who catch him and they land safely on a lower level of the scaffold. Ginta points out that the chase would never end due to his phobia. Questioning his struggle, Alan recalls when he saw the eyes of the lady in white, and realizes he met her somewhere before.

A construction worker approaches them and Ginta gets up to apologize for trespassing, but Alan recognizes the danger and looks at his Dimension ÄRM, Air Hammer. The construction worker reveals itself to be a monstrous Guardian, and Alan instictively defends Ginta with Air Hammer. The Guardian gets back up, but Ginta and Babbo quickly finish it off. Ginta picks up a piece of the slain Guardian, recognizing the large pierces in its flesh as the same pierces that Alan and the others had on them. Concluding that the memory pierces and lady and white were connected, Alan says that it wasn't his style and removes the pierce himself, immediately regaining his memory. He heads back with them to the apartment building owned by Koyuki's relatives, though he's quick to run out when he sees all of the cats that Jack and Nanashi collected.

Alan Exploring Tokyo

Alan explores "Tokyo" while looking for Alviss.

Alan and the rest of the team continue to wander around "Tokyo" in search of Alviss, with Ginta acting as their local guide. While visiting his childhood playground, Ginta and Babbo run off into a strange mist and get separated from the rest of the team. They return to the apartment to wait, and once they return with Alviss, Ginta asks Koyuki if she was real. Hurt by his suspicion, Koyuki runs out of the building in tears.

Alan gives support to Ginta for his suspicion, as he too had been in deep thought about the circumstances they were in ever since he regained his memory. He tells them about a soldier in the Cross Guard who vanished in Gaira's Gate of Training during the previous war who possessed a Unique ÄRM that materialized memories and thoughts. Since it was only a hypothesis, Ginta opted to go to his own apartment to see if there was anything that could help prove or disprove it.

The rest of the team decided to wait, but Alan heard the arrival of the police surrounding the building. They sneak out to the roof, and flee by clinging to Dorothy's Zephyrus Broom while she flew. The team flew to a mysterious fog in nearby where they found Ginta having a fist fight with a fake Kannochi. After the fake leaves, Alan yells for Lilith to come out.

The lady in white, "Lilith", reveals herself and walks into a strange gate. Pleine Lune revealed its true form as well and guarded the way in by summoning an army of knights. Ginta, Babbo, Dorothy and Alan went after Lilith while Alviss, Nanashi, and Jack stayed and fought the knights.

RIP Lilith

Discovery of Lilith's body and memory pierce.

Ginta and the others found themselves in a perfect recreation of Lilith's village, prior to its destruction in the first war. They found her upstairs in her house, and asked to be released. When she doesn't respond, Alan walks around and kneels down in front of her and realizes Lilith had manipulated her own memory in order to stay happy. In addition, she herself had already died since before Team MÄR arrived in the Gate of Training and her ÄRM remaining active was due to her residual magic power. Ginta drops to his knees out of shock. They return from the gate, and Ginta gives Pleine Lune a rest by defeating it with Gargoyle. The illusions vanished and revealed the normal space of the Gate of Training. The team splits off to their own gates to resume their training.

The following night, the team finishes their training and return to Reginleif Castle when Pozun appears to inform them of Phantom's decision to begin the final round the following day.

Round 7[]

Team MÄR gathers together at the castle with more spectators than ever before to cheer them on. Pozun approaches to offer his congratulations for their group making it to the final battle. Ginta interrupts him to get on with starting the battle, and Pozun prepares the arena.

Match 1[]

The first match pits Jack against Vidar. Alan quietly observes the fight, but does shout at Jack for leisurely touching the enemy's explosive flowering plant. After Jack defeated Vidar, Alan put his hand on Gaira's shoulder, as a way to comfort him due to weeping tears of joy and pride.

Match 2[]

To celebrate another victory, Alan and his teammates go to the local bath house, despite everyone wearing swimsuits. Along with Gaira, he dons a speedo to display their muscular bodies and glisten in their masculinity. The two join the rest of the team to pamper Dorothy by offering their own brand of special Cross Guard-style back massage, followed by a series of masculine poses.

Match 3[]

After Chimera is revealed to be a woman in the battle against Dorothy, she explains the circumstances that led to her body mutilation at the hands of angry civilian. Alviss is horrified at such barbarity and asks Alan if it was true. Alan confirms it, saying they formed mobs to retaliate against the Chess out of hatred after the first war. Alviss remorsefully acknowledges Chimera to be another victim of the war, but she dismisses his pity as unnecessary.

The match ends with Dorothy defeating Chimera, and Alan calls out Halloween to have them finish what began six years ago in the first War Game. Alan's composure changes after Halloween refers to him as a "hypocrite with a hero complex", only for the conflict to be stopped by Pozun.

Alan's Guilt

Alan filled with guilt after telling Alviss about his childhood friend Pump.

Seeing their concern for him, Alan then takes his team out for dinner at a local restaurant. The team was initially repulsed by the cuisine, consisting of several large insects and lizards, but they all change their perceptions and dig in after Ginta bravely tries it first. Alviss notices Alan's unstable magic power and becomes alarmed when he suddenly grabs a passing customer's arm due to the bracelet ÄRM he wore. Alviss calls to him to snap him out of his angry trance, and he lets go of the customer's arm. Alan goes outside for fresh air and Alviss follows to ask Alan what was wrong.

After telling Alviss of his childhood friend Pump, Alan punches the tree next to him, filled with regret that he had awoken the demon that was dormant in heart by lending him a flame ÄRM. Alviss insists that he didn't do anything wrong by trying to help Pump, and that there are many other lives that he did save. He asks Alan to win his match before heading back to the restaurant.

Match 4[]
Alan's Coolness

Alan showing off his power at the very beginning of the fight.

Within fractions of a second after Pozun signals the match to start, Halloween activates the Nature ÄRM, Flame Hands, and extends them to attack but Alan activates his Dimension ÄRM, Air Hammer, to blow them away with little effort. Pozun frantically scurries out of the line of fire while Halloween laughs that Alan hasn't lost his touch since their previous battle. Alan points out that he began the battle with the same attack in their previous battle as well, questioning if he's going easy on him.

Beckoned by the dissatisfaction, Halloween activates a new Nature ÄRM, Antares, and summons a huge fire ball that is thrown towards him. Alan effortlessly turns his shoulder to evade, but turns around in horror to see innocent spectators behind him set ablaze. Halloween responds that since Alan won't die easily, he'll target the audience because they're far easier to kill. Halloween lobs more fireballs at the audience while Alan cancels them out with his Air Hammer to defend them. He misses one of the fire balls and turns around to see Dorothy snuff it out with her Nature ÄRM, Zephyrus Broom. She reassures him that the rest of the team will defend the audience and he can focus on the match.

Halloween activates Weapon ÄRM, Napalm Death, which summons a huge cannon which then proceeds to fire a huge shot. Dorothy realizes that she and her teammates can't block the cannon due to such strong magic power it utilizes. Alan calmly holds his ground and the first shot. Halloween taunts Alan by calling him a "hypocrite" for risking his life to shield his teammates, and continues to fire more shots to test how long his "fake heroism" lasts. Alan continues to endure each hit, leaving bits of his clothes torn and charred and his skin burned.

Halloween commends Alan for having grown strong again, and summons his Guardian ÄRM, Trick-or-Treat. The stage fills with scarecrow like plants with jack-o-lanterns for heads and they begin to wobble past Alan. Alan punches all the plants into oblivion while calling Halloween a coward for attacking the innocent. One hops down to Team MÄR, and Ginta tosses Babbo at its head, causing it to explode. Entrusting the ones behind him to his teammates, Alan punches all of the ones in front of him into oblivion and shows off to his team for being slow at finishing up.

Alan hollers at Halloween that if he is a hypocrite then the latter is a coward. Amused, Halloween observes that Alan hasn't changed since they younger and shouldn't have forgiven him. Alan realizes Halloween is his former childhood friend, Pump. Halloween laughs in confirmation, admitting that he was glad to see Alan again in the previous War Games as them being on opposing sides was fitting. Alan agrees that is shocking that they have an entwined history, thus all the more reason to take down Halloween and end their feud.

With nostalgia on his mind, Halloween uses the Darkness ÄRM, Grave Hail, which summons coffins possessing mouths and eyes. The coffins open up and reveal the skeletal corpses of deceased Cross Guard soldiers, reanimated to do Halloween's bidding. Alan hesitates, knowing that the zombies were his comrades in life, but resolutely attacks each of them with Air Hammer, remarking that it's unlike him to be sentimental. The zombies reform and repeat attacking, with one of them nearly swiping at Alan with a sword. Alan resorts to punching with his fists, and tosses one outside the arena. When he sees that it dissolves, he switches back to using his Air Hammer to wipe them out and destroy the coffins to prevent them from reforming.

Alan's Endurance

Alan endures the blaze by Halloween's Cross Dagger.

Alan then taunts his opponent by referring to him as "Pump". Enraged, he yells that he is Halloween of the Zodiacs and activates the Nature ÄRM, Cross Dagger, which Alan takes head on. As the flames clear, Alan wounded comments that the flame was tepid. Halloween asks Alan how it feels to be fighting a childhood friend. He returns the question and mocks Halloween for having quit humanity to be a tomato. Giggling, Halloween expresses desire to turn him into a dog again.

Alan states that Halloween isn't the only fire manipulator and activates his Nature ÄRM, Flame Dragon. Halloween counters with his own Nature ÄRM, Sticks of Fire, and says that he won't lose to fire. With neither backing down, Ginta cheers Alan on from behind. Hearing the boy, Halloween's bitterness rises and intensifies his attack. Alarmed by this change, Alan responds to match and exceed the power with Flame Dragon, knocking Halloween's stick out of his hand and gives an arrogant hand gesture.

Halloween explains his perspective that Alan was looking down on him when they were kids, finding his offer to help him with bullies as establishing a power dynamic. Alan shook his head, saying he only wanted to be a friend due his own isolation of being feared as the toughest kid. Insulted by such a simple reason, Halloween denies the misunderstanding as they've lived in different worlds from the very beginning. Accepting that this was likely the case, Alan gives both his greeting and his parting words to Pump, deciding to put an end to the fight.

Having enough of Alan, Halloween also decides to finish the fight and summons his Guardian ÄRM, Wakan Tanka. Alan runs to meet its charge, kicking and punching it with every swoop it attempts to make. It manages to knock him back, but he gets back up to catch it by jaws with his hands. Wakan Tanka exhales intense flame onto Alan. Struggling to endure, Alan uses his rising magic power to summon his new Guardian ÄRM, Saint Anger.

Alan Summons Saint Anger

Alan summons Saint Anger against Wakan Tanka.

Caught off guard by the giant pair of hands, Halloween shrieks in fear as the right crushes Wakan Tanka to pieces. The left hand grabs Halloween and tosses him through the air as he screams. At the moment of impact by the punch of the right hand, Halloween acknowledges Alan to truly be strong. The punch sends Halloween flying into the sky to his demise, having dropped the flame ÄRM that he stole from Alan long ago.

Pozun declares Alan the winner, who gazes at the sky where his former friend flew in, and casually walked off the stage, stepping on his old flame ÄRM in the process. Everyone congratulated him, though none more so than Edward who exclaimed that his grudge for having been fused with him has been avenged. Alan concurs, taking off his white coat and dumping it on Edward, only to be startled by Chaton running up to hug him. Chaton humorously comments that had the match been another draw, she would've asked Halloween to fuse him with her. Horrified at the thought, Alan exclaims he'd rather fuse with the dog again.

After the War Games[]

Alan participated in storming Lestava Castle and helped Ginta fight Magical Roe. He alongside Team MÄR were captured by the Ghost Chess alongside Chaton and Loco, but escaped.

When the Chess Piece King Caldea's Orb showed up in person in the form of a armored knight, Alan fought him and was the first one killed by him. Before dying, he gave his earring to Chaton. When Caldea's Orb was destroyed, Alan was revived.

In the end of the anime, Alan lives with Chaton, Babbo, and the baby Loco.

ÄRMs[]

Alan's ÄRMs include:

  • Flame Dragon: A fire Nature ÄRM, Alan initially refers to it as an "ÄRM of Flame" when lending it to Ginta and is able to conjure fire in any form. Alan also uses it to light his cigars.
  • Training Gate: A Dimension ÄRM that Alan used to train Ginta, Snow, Jack. and Dorothy. It puts people at the user's will inside this gate, where time slows to 1/60th of its outside time and with many challenges programmed within it, the dimension serves good training ground. The drawback to using this ÄRM is that Alan cannot go inside the Gate himself and he cannot move while he uses it.
  • Air Hammer: A set of rings and bangles Dimension ÄRM and Alan's most frequently used weapon. It uses an attack called "Air Freeze" that creates blasts of air shaped into concussive blasts and compensates for Alan's lack of ranged attacks.
  • Merilo: A pendant Guardian ÄRM in the form of a polite, slender girl with a cat tail and ears, used to help people the Training Gate train, and to navigate for them. She's referred to as 'the cute one'. Although she does have cat attributes, Alan isn't allergic to her because she is an ÄRM .
  • Bumoru: A Guardian ÄRM in the form of a rude, fat woman with a bear tail and ears, used to help people the Training Gate train, and to navigate for them. She's referred to as 'the ugly one.'
  • Saint Anger: Incarnating Alan's fists of justice and expanding an even wider reach, these armor hands that descend from heaven thunder earth with its deliverance of God's punishment to all sinners.
